Another Cut -
Iwan Baan & Sergei Sviatchenko
︎10th October - 22nd November︎
What happens when Iwan Baan’s photography meets the scissors of Sergei Sviatchenko? In Another Cut, two distinct ways of seeing and constructing come together. In his photographs Baan captures architecture as a living environment, shaped by the people, movement, encounters and unexpected uses that give a building meaning. Sviatchenko then poses a question: what if architecture is no longer seen as something fixed, but as material that can be cut, reduced, deconstructed and reconstructed into a new visual reality?
This is the first time Sergei Sviatchenko has worked with photographs by another artist that are already autonomous works of art in their own right. Another Cut explores the interplay between photography and collage, between people and architecture, and between the existing and the unexpected. It is an artistic dialogue between two autonomous works of art and two different ways of seeing. “Iwan Baan’s work is the original construction of my Cut. His photography and my method function as a whole”, says Sviatchenko.
For the exhibition, photo series by Iwan Baan taken from a helicopter have been selected. These include the series on Italian infrastructure around and along motorways (2024), which marked the beginning of the collaboration between Baan and Sviatchenko. Also included is the photo series on Dutch water infrastructure and the landscape, which was specially adapted for Another Cut at Het Kunstgemaal using Sviatchenko’s Cut.
